Yesterday

Emery woke up with Meyers's snotty nose yesterday. They were both acting like they felt fine, so we went ahead with our plans to go to the zoo. Stacy and her girls were in town, and we had plans to meet up with them.

Emery didn't nap there because she will only nap in her bed, but she was so sweet. She didn't go down for a nap until 1:30, and was so pleasant! Well she woke up after only an hour or so. I couldn't get her back down, so we played. I noticed her breathing fast and checked her chest for retracting. I didn't hear any wheeze, but she was definitely retracting. I called the doctor and they told us to come right in. Poor Meyers. She hardly ever naps, but she was sound asleep, and I had to yank her out of bed.
Like I still do with Meyers's breathing/asthma issues, I was totally second guessing myself. But I'm SO glad I called. She was wheezing like crazy by the time we got to the doctor and still retracting. They did a breathing treatment there and sent us home with a nebulizer. We don't have one for Meyers because our allergist thinks that an inhaler with a mask and spacer is just as effective (and more convenient). After doing the treatments on Emery a few times now, I can say that is is most definitely easier to hold her down and use the mask and spacer than to use the nebulizer. We actually have a mask and spacer her size that we never used for Meyers, so we just used that and Meyers's inhaler.
Emery is still wheezing and breathing fast today. The doctor told me I could give her some of Meyers's steroid if I thought she needed it. I hate that they left that up to me, and I was hoping not to use it. I hate giving either of them medicine like that, but if it helps them breathe, than that is obviously the right and only choice. I gave her the steroid about an hour ago and she sounds much better. Not back to normal, but better. I am determined not to take her to the emergency room (they would only give her a steroid and breathing treatments there, too), so I will give her the steroid at home if that keeps my 8 month old out of the ER! Since the steroid helped, it makes me feel like I did the right thing, and that maybe we can nip this before it gets too escalated.
I just hope and pray that we are not going down the same asthma path with Emery that we have with Meyers. I KNOW that there could be worse things for sure, but I'm hoping this is an isolated incident. I guess if it's not, the good thing is we know what to do. One positive thing......
Here is this pitiful monkey getting her breathing treatment last night...

  1. What a pitiful picture........bless her little heart! I wonder if some of the animals at the zoo might have been a cause........maybe she is allergic to some of them?? Just a thought, since it happened after you came home from the zoo! I hope not, b/c that would mean you would have to limit your trips to the zoo until she outgrows them! In any case, hope she feels better soon!
